  Why Is Smoking A Disfellowshipping Offense?

  the main reason given in the 1973 watchtower was that smoking is tied in with spiritism because the greek word which is rendered as spiritism is pharmakia' which literally means "druggery," (see galatians 5:20.

  ) therefore the argument was made that by smoking we put ourselves under spiritistic or demonic control.

  for the last 20 years i haven't heard this reason used.. today the reasons given are that smoking shows no respect for your body as well as for life and that smoking doesn't show love of neighbor.

  it not nice to talk about the death of someone, but realisticly ray franz will die sometime.what will happen to the books he's written will anyone take over the publishing?.

  also do you think the society will use his death as a opportunity to attack his claims , when he can no longer defend them?

  When Ray passes away, he will likely be the first member of the Governing Body to ever make it to heaven.

  Maybe he'll be helping to wage 'the good fight' on 'the other side'.

  Is that opposed to the Muslim 'hot' terriorist war mentaility we're now facing.

  As much I think Bush is very dangerous for this country

  I think the polictically correct 'apathy' this country has meandered through these past 10 years is far more dangerous than President Bush. Thank God some of the 'sleepers' are waking up.

  Is the death penalty effective in usa?

  im asking this because lately in the uk 2 girls were murdered that were only 12 yrs old and now 59% population of the uk want the death penalty reinstated.. i assume you already have the death penalty in the usa, but do you think it is effective reducing 1st degree murder and potential child molesters,would you like to see the death penalty removed in the united states or not.. i wonder if the death penalty will be reinstated in the uk what do you think, personally i dont think it will maybe the politicians are afraid they wont get as many votes.

  If the crime rate drops when a country or state introduces the death penalty.

  If only statistics were that easy. I've heard that they confiscated the guns from the private citizens in Australia a few years ago. Now it seems that crime is up, including murder.

  Welcome C.B. You and I are in the same boat. I've never been a JW, but have a friend who is one. I came to this board to try and figure them out....hold on to your hat...it's going to be a bumpy but interesting ride.

  These are a great bunch of people who've made me feel welcomed since last January. In fact, sometimes I 'feel' so much like an ex-Jw that I start mentally reminising about my old 'cong' in the 'borg' and then I have to stop, slap myself, and say "wait a minute, I was never a JW".

  As far as a deterrant, yes and no. I believe it depends on the person. For those that have been deterred, how will we ever know for it to become a statistic?

  The Death Penalty alone seems like a very simple concept to me. There are laws made, that if broken, have consequences.

  If you brutally take someone's life from them and their family and friends, the law says you have to be prepared to forfeit your own. The decision isn't made by the state, the decision is made by that inidividual...who gambled with their own life by cold bloodedly deciding to take another's....the state is only carrying out that decision.

  My 12year old son likes baseball,

  however there are very few other kids around who know anything about it, he would like to know more about the rules, general info, can anyone suggest anything, a website perhaps.

  he is nearly 13, and has a training ball, a catcher's mitt and a silver slugger 30inch baseball bat, only his sister to play with, i do my best but i'm not too sporty.

  we are in north scotland.

  I love baseball, but dislike the overpaid crybaby millionaires who now play the game. Last night I watched the Little League World Series that is currently going on. Japan was playing a team from the Carribean. It was great! Those 10-12 year olds have the skills, the game moves much faster than professional baseball...and it's more exciting to watch because their still young and anything can happen. You might be able to catch it today on cable ... I think the USA plays Japan later today.

  SIMON: In baseball the "bowlers" are called "pitchers"

  By the way, I work with a guy from Scotland who loves baseball too. He was telling me about going the the Dodger game last week. He's become quite a fan (and of course, when the World Cup was on he was the consumate expert clueing us in to what was going on).
